Stewardship Merriam-webster dictionary definition 1 : the office, duties, and obligations of a steward 2 : the conducting, supervising, or managing of something especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care
Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Man was given the duty of stewardship everything on the earth. Genesis 2:15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Man was to steward the garden. God is the owner, stewards don’t own anything but are entrusted with it.
Deuteronomy 8:17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ 18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Remember it is God who gives all!
John 3:27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. Realize everything you have has come from God.
Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, Your children, home, finances, work, etc. Should all be done towards God.
Stewards of the Mysteries of God (responsibility)
Titus 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, Is this your demeanor?
1 Corinthians 4:1 Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God. 1 Corinthians 9:17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. We have all been given the responsibility to a ministry. To spreading the good news of Jesus Christ!
Sacrificial Service for Christ
Colossians 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, Luke 12:42 And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes…. 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more. As stewards God has given us the responsibility to spread the Gospel for the glory of Jesus.
The Parable of the Unjust Steward (accountability)
Luke 16:1 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods. 2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’ 3 “Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’5 “So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ 8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own? 13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
You will give account of how you used the money God gave you when you stand before Him. Remember this before your next big spend, or when tempted to buy something you shouldn’t. Pray about all things.
Stewards of What God has given you.
1 Peter 4:10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Proverbs 3:9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; Leviticus 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord. If you are in a Church leadership role are you being cautious and praying about the tithe. It is holy to the Lord and shouldn’t be squandered or used on things that are not God ordained. I was once in a church where the Lord spoke to my wife that the tithe was being misused by church leadership. Are you tithing somewhere? 10% of your income is what God has set in His word. Don’t rob God of His tithe. Pray about where to place His tithe where it can be used for His glory.
